Metal buildings are durable, but they get dirty over time. Like any other structure, they need tender loving care and maintenance. Keeping a steel building in tiptop condition starts with basic maintenance tasks. Simple washing with soap and water can get rid of all the dust on the surface.

We tend to overlook basic maintenance tasks until issues start to appear. This is why Texas Custom Metal Buildings of Midland is here to help you. We have the tips to make cleaning your metal building as easy as ABC.

What Is the Steel Building Advantage?

Steel buildings are known to be cheap but sturdy. If you already own one, you know they require minimal cleaning and maintenance. This is the steel building advantage that you can’t find in other structures. Simple upkeep will prevent them from collapsing or getting serious damage.

When to Wash Your Metal Building?

We recommend washing your metal building at least once a year. You may also schedule bi-annual cleanings for optimal maintenance. After the autumn is the best way to wash your steel structures. Around this time, there might be leaves and dust on the building surface. Spring is also a good season to remove any winter residue and chalk-like film.

Steps for Washing Metal Building Surfaces

Start Preparing

The best way to clean your metal building is to prepare accordingly. Get a soft long-handled brush, microfiber rags, and mild, phosphate-free detergent. Wipe down the spots using a soft sponge to prevent any damage. You may also use a pressure washer for easier cleaning. These items will help loosen dirt on the exterior structure.

Next, close all doors and windows tightly to prevent leaking. Shut off exterior sockets, exterior lights, and power outlets for your safety. Before washing the structure, you should cover potted plants near the perimeter.

Clear Away Dirt and Chalk on the Surface

Most metal buildings are exposed to airborne dirt and grease. That’s why chalk-like residue can be seen on their surfaces. When these sediments build up, it might be harder to wash your metal building.

Use a Pressure Washer

Rainwater is not enough to clear them away. A pressure washer is effective in cleaning large areas. Make sure you’re using the right type of pressure washer to remove dirt and mildew on the building’s walls. You may purchase an inexpensive pressure washer or rent one at hardware stores.

Start by setting the equipment to the lowest setting. Rinse the first section by pointing the nozzle from top to bottom. Remember that the nozzle should be at least 3 feet away from the structure itself. A pre-soak is needed to remove all the loose dirt on the surface. Quickly rinse all sections and repeat several times.

For the actual washing, create a mixture of 1/4 cup detergent and one gallon of water. This cleaning solution is commonly used in steel structures. You may contact your steel building contractor for any cleaning product recommendations.

Now, add the soapy liquid into the pressure washer and move section by section. Rinse the surface again until there are no traces of detergent. Heavily soiled areas need to be cleaned using a brush.

Inspect Steel Buildings After Storms or Disasters

Your metal carport or steel barn can get quite dirty after a storm or flood. As steel building experts, we suggest that you check your home post-disaster. This step is crucial in ensuring that there’s no damage or leaks.

DIY or Hire a Pro?

Although washing is a basic maintenance task, not everyone has the time to tackle it. If you can’t clean your metal building yourself, you can hire someone to do it for you. Professional cleaning companies can keep your structure in great shape.
